We arrived into Pisa Centrale by train from Florence, a journey of around an hour passing through beautiful Tuscan countryside. We only had the afternoon & evening as we were flying home the next day. Hot Tip – for those who are not aware if you are flying back to the UK from Florence the airport is actually in Pisa!
The No 1 bus which we picked up outside the station dropped us at the Bonanno 5 stop where it was a very short walk to our hotel & the Leaning Tower of Pisa was just a 5 minute walk from there!
Our first sight of the Leaning Tower was pretty amazing!
The Leaning Tower, Pisa Cathedral & the Baptistery can all be found in Piazza del Duomo also known as Piazza dei Miracoli.
The Leaning Tower:
Building began in 12th century this is the bell tower of Pisa Cathedral, famous for its leaning caused by the soft soil on which it was built.
The Tower closed to the public in 1990 while engineers made it safe, it reopened in 2001.

Pisa Cathedral:
This is a medieval cathedral completed in 1092!
The Baptistry:
It is the largest in Italy with a circumference of 104.24m and 54.86m high.
It was consecrated in 1118.
Piazza dei Cavalieri (Knights Square):
This piazza is a short walk from the Leaning Tower where you will find Palazzo della Carovana, a splendid building that dominates the square
On our way to see Piazza dei Cavalieri we passed the Church of San Sisto, consecrated in 1133. We couldn’t resist a peek inside!
Via Santa Maria is where you’ll find a great choice of restaurants. We had the best food of our 10 day trip to Italy here!
We enjoyed a lovely light snack at lunchtime at Restaurant L’Europeo on Via Maria – Bruschetta with
tomato & burrata – delicious!
We enjoyed it so much that we returned to the same restaurant later that evening where Rich enjoyed Pappardelle with Wild Boar Ragu & I had Seafood Pizza – the best ever! We shared a Panna Cotta with Caramel Sauce for dessert, it was fabulous food, with a half-litre of house red wine the bill came to €46 including a €3 cover charge! (2025) Highly recommend.
We literally had about 12 hours in Pisa but we had such a great day!
