• Check the regulations of the country you are travelling to regarding prescription medicines and over the counter ones. Some medicines are controlled especially if they fall within the Opium Act which some strong painkillers do. You should also check the quantity that you are allowed to take into a country.

• Take a copy of your prescriptions with you to prove that they are for your own use should you be asked.

• It’s always a good idea to keep your medicines in their original packaging when travelling.

• Always carry your medicines in your hand luggage as hold luggage can and does go missing.

• Ensure you have enough of your regular medication for your whole trip plus a few spares in case of travel delays so order them in good time from your doctor.

• Take advice from a pharmacist if you are travelling to a country with extremes of temperature regarding storage of your medicines.

• Pack a small general first aid kit containing such items as plasters, paracetamol, bite cream, antiseptic cream, antihistamine tablets and a small pair of scissors. (scissors cannot be carried in hand luggage).

• Carry an Allergy Alert Card if you have a life-threatening allergy.

• Carry a Medical (Emergency) Alert Card if you take medication or have a medical condition that medics need to be aware of in case of an emergency.
